Japanese carmakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan have just added millions of vehicles to the recall they issued last year over a defect in passenger airbags supplied by Takata Corp. The affected vehicles have a defective part which “could cause the airbag inflator to rupture and deploy the airbag abnormally in a crash”. And Ford is making sure that this would not be a cause of any recall but ultimately they will be debuting a new airbag technology to go on with its 2015 Mustang later this year.
The new airbag technology yet to be debuted by Ford is significantly 75% smaller and 65% lighter from the traditional airbag. The key injection-molded plastic bladder(which reduces most weights) replaces a traditional fabric air bag and is sandwiched between the inner and outer panels of the glove box door. The system works when the car’s sensor detect an imminent crash impact it inflates the bladder, which provides soft cushion by extending the glove box outer door panel toward the driver’s legs. You can full understand how it works when you watch the video above.
“With this innovative air bag design, we have developed technology that provides protection for vehicle occupants while also reducing weight and enabling greater design flexibility,” according from Sean West, Ford’s restraints manager.
And it seemed Ford is really serious when it comes to car safety which the company has 15 patents on the system —-more have been filed. Furthermore, the new Mustang have a added “seatbelt pretensioners that tighten the belt prior to a crash and a doubling of the number of air bags to eight.”
